Latest College Football Playoff Rankings: Ohio State Falls After Loss, Georgia Maintains Top Spot

The penultimate College Football Playoff rankings were released on Tuesday ahead of conference championship weekend.

Georgia retained the No. 1 spot after escaping Bobby Dodd Stadium with a 31-23 victory against Georgia Tech in “Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate.” The Bulldogs will face their stiffest competition of the season when they travel back to Atlanta for a matchup against No. 8 Alabama in the SEC championship game.

Michigan jumped to No. 2 after knocking off Ohio State in “The Game,” punching its ticket to its third consecutive Big Ten title game on Saturday against No. 16 Iowa, a contest that could also potentially shake up the final CFP rankings.

With the Buckeyes’ loss to the Wolverines, Washington moved up to No. 3 following Grady Gross’s game-winning field goal to defeat Washington State in the last Apple Cup. Friday’s Pac-12 title matchup between the Huskies and No. 5 Oregon will likely determine which team will represent the Pac-12 in this year’s CFP.

No. 4 Florida State held onto its playoff spot after winning a tightly contested affair against Florida with backup quarterback Tate Rodemaker. As things stand, an FSU win against No. 14 Louisville in the ACC championship game could secure the Seminoles' spot in the top four.

While Ohio State’s aspirations of playing for a CFP title are not fully diminished, the Buckeyes will likely need some chaos to take place in the Big Ten, SEC and Pac-12 championship games on Saturday to keep their hopes alive.

If the CFP semifinal contests started today, No. 1 Georgia would face No. 4 Florida State in one game, while No. 2 Michigan and No. 3 Washington would clash in the other playoff matchup. This year’s semifinal games will take place in New Orleans at the Sugar Bowl and in Miami at the Orange Bowl on Jan. 1.
