Paris (AFP) - France winger Teddy Thomas scored a late try as La Rochelle edged Gloucester 29-26 to reach the Champions Cup quarter-finals but said his team's performance was "not worthy".
Gloucester led by four points with just three minutes left on Saturday before Thomas rescued the defending champions from France.
La Rochelle will face either three-time champions Saracens or the Ospreys, who meet on Sunday.
"It's good that we won, but what we did is not satisfactory or worthy for champions," Thomas told France Televisions after his side conceded three tries.
"It showed we have character though, even when things are difficult we managed to react."
The sides were level 15-all at the break as hooker Pierre Bourgarit and Thomas went over for the hosts and centre Chris Harris and lock Freddie Clarke did so for the English outfit on the Atlantic coast.
Ex-All Blacks scrum-half Tawera Kerr-Barlow sniped over from short range with 35 minutes to play before Gloucester then led 26-22 after two Billy Twelvetrees penalties and a try from Wales winger Louis Rees-Zammit.
The champions faced a tough task to keep the defence of the trophy alive but 29-year-old Thomas claimed his second try of the game with three minutes remaining to the joy of a sell-out crowd at Stade Marcel-Deflandre.
Elsewhere, five-time winners Leinster will host English champions Leicester after they claimed the Irish derby spoils by 30-15 over Ulster at Lansdowne Road.
More than 50,000 people braved the torrential rain in Dublin two weeks after Ireland claimed a Six Nations Grand Slam, but the hosts were without injured fly-half Johnny Sexton.
Sexton's replacement in the provincial No.10 shirt Ross Byrne kicked 15 points as scrum-half Jamison Gibson-Park, lock Ryan Baird and prop Andrew Porter scored tries.
Historic Sharks, Stormers
Earlier, Springboks hooker Bongi Mbonambi scored twice to help the Sharks ease past Munster 50-35 while the Stormers beat Harlequins 32-28 as the two South African sides reached the last eight for the first time.
Mbonambi's tries against the two-time former winners came in a four-minute spell in the second-half to set up a last-eight tie next weekend with either Toulouse or the Bulls, who meet on Sunday.
The Durban-based outfit are one of three South African sides featuring in the Champions Cup this season for the first time, along with the Bulls and the Stormers, whose flanker Deon Fourie also claimed a double in the victory over Quins.
"It was a tough outing, it was really hot out there," Sharks and Boks captain Siya Kolisi told SuperSport.
"We knew what we had to do, they're a great side, they have a great history in this competition," he added after the win in 26 degrees sunshine on the Indian Ocean coast.
In similar heat in Cape Town, 36-year-old Fourie set the Stormers up for victory by crossing after just 55 seconds and added a second just before the half-hour mark.
Springboks prop Steven Kitshoff, full-back Damian Willemse, with an acrobatic touchline finish, and replacement flanker Willie Engelbrecht also scored for the side from the Western Province.
The Stormers' reward will be a fixture against either 2020 winners Exeter or Top 14 champions Montpellier, who play in England on Sunday.
