Late Late Toy Show 2022: Ryan Tubridy says cursing 'Fantagate' was 'dark moment' but one of the best things to ever happen

Ryan Tubridy said ‘Fantagate’ was a ‘dark moment’ but one of the best things to ever happen to him - as he feels it made the audience connect with him more.

The Late Late Toy Show presenter got tongues wagging during the live show two years ago when he was heard cursing as a bottle of Fanta fizzed up and spilled all over him during a segment with a child.

The moment went viral, with many debating when he said the ‘F’ word or ‘B’ word as he stared down the camera when he realised his own mistake.

And the highest paid RTE host, 49, admitted that whilst he is still ‘triggered’ by the sight of the fizzy orange drink to this day, he now looks back on it as a memorable moment in his career for good reason.

“I now walk down the aisle in Supervalu and see Fanta and I’m triggered,” he joked.

“I’m brought right back there. It was a dark moment in my career, but one of the funniest. “And actually it was one of the best things to ever happen because suddenly people at home went ‘oh he’s like a real parent’.

He explained: “It goes to show that it is live and I loved that moment actually. Because it is so real, and as I get a little older, it becomes even more fun.

The presenter joked that he got his investigative skills out afterwards to pin-point what happened on the night, adding: “The question was was it sabotage or a gentle accident, and there was a Fanta tribunal set up by me and it turned out it was the heat of a light near it or something boring like that.

“That’s the science bit.”

“That was the goof to end all goofs,” he added, whilst admitting he can’t rule out that bad language won’t slip out again.

“It could happen,” he said.
