Late Celtic penalty appeal vs St Johnstone goes under Ref Watch microscope

Former English Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher doesn't think Celtic should have had a penalty in their loss to St Johnstone on Sunday.

Brendan Rodgers' men were defeated by the Perth side for the first time in nine years as Daniels Balodis' first-half header proved crucial.

Celtic came into the game in the latter stages. James Forrest missed a significant opportunity to make it 1-1 with nine minutes to go before Luke McCowan and Adam Idah both went close.

In the dying embers of stoppage time, right-back Alistair Johnston went down in the box, only for referee David Dickinson to blow the whistle for full-time moments later.

This morning on Sky Sports News' Ref Watch segment, Gallagher was quizzed on the incident, in which the host said Johnston was 'lifted like the FA Cup'.

"Yeah, but he's also got his arm around the defender, so I don't think it's a penalty," replied Gallagher.

"If you look at Johnston, he's got his arm around the back of the defender. It's almost like the defender's trying to get off him, so pulling back puts Johnston in the air.

"It's not a penalty for me."

Celtic have now lost four domestic games this season and dropped 14 league points since the turn of the year.

Regardless, Rodgers' side possess a healthy lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership and could secure the title this weekend if they beat Kilmarnock on Saturday and Rangers lose to Aberdeen at Pittodrie on Sunday.
