Customers in Tranent are to be left without a bank, as the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) announces they’re closing the branch in summer.
As the last remaining bank branch in the town, residents will need to head four miles away to Musselburgh for their nearest RBS. They’ve said for those who require face to face banking, the local Post Office which also sits on the High Street can be used.
Checking a balance as well as withdrawing and paying in money can be done at the Post Office. RBS have said their dedicated support line is open from 8am until 8pm seven days a week, available for those over 60-years-old.

RBS confirmed that between 2019 and 2022, counter transactions decreased by 48 per cent. Similarly, users on the RBS mobile app increased by 36 per cent between the same period.
The bank will close its doors on July 27. An RBS spokesperson said: “As with many industries, most of our customers are shifting to mobile and online banking, because it’s faster and easier for people to manage their financial lives.
“We understand and recognise that digital solutions aren’t for everyone or every situation, and that when we close branches we have to make sure that no one is left behind. We take our responsibility seriously to support the people who face challenges in moving online, so we are investing to provide them with support and alternatives that work for them.”
