Las Vegas Strip Sphere signs another superstar band residency

The pop music boy band phenomenon's beginnings go all the way back to the birth of rock and roll in the mid-1950s.

The first pop music boy band with a huge hit was Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers, which, in 1956, recorded "Why Do Fools Fall In Love."

One of the biggest boy bands of all time, The Jackson 5, had their first No. 1 hit with "I Want You Back" in January 1970 after releasing the song in October 1969. The most famous brother Michael Jackson would split from the group in 1984 after the huge success of his solo album "Thriller."

A new era of pop boy bands started

A new era of pop boy bands took hold in the 1980s and 90s when New Kids on the Block formed in 1984 in Boston. The group disbanded in 1994 and reunited in 2008.

Around the time when New Kids On the Block disbanded, several other boy bands began forming to carry the torch forward. The Backstreet Boys arrived in 1993, NSYNC formed in 1995, and 98 Degrees started in 1997.

NSYNC broke up in 2004, according to member Lance Bass' autobiography "Out of Sync." 98 Degrees went on hiatus in 2002 until 2012, and The Backstreet Boys also have gone on hiatus.

98 Degrees and New Kids On the Block made comebacks, and both bands have their Las Vegas connections.

98 Degrees performed at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas on New Year's Eve 2023 and 2024, and New Kids On the Block will open its first Las Vegas Strip residency with 24 shows stretching from June, July, and November 2025 at Dolby Live at Park MGM, then returning for eight more shows in February 2026. Ticket prices started at $79 before taxes and fees.
