Most references define residency as an official place of residence, and most people agree with that.
The residency definition contains several variations, however. A residency can refer to a person's home, or a medical professional can take residency in a hospital or clinic for training.

When it comes to Las Vegas, it's well-known that residencies are headliners' extended engagements in hotel-casino theaters.
Some of the most famous residencies in Las Vegas included Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack dating back to the early 1960s and Elvis Presley's long-running sell-out engagement at the then-new International Hotel just off the Strip which opened July 2, 1969 and ran through Dec. 12, 1976 for 636 shows.
1970s pop superstar Barry Manilow in September 2023 broke Elvis Presley's record of sold-out shows in the International Theater at Westgate Las Vegas just off the Strip, which had previously been the Las Vegas Hilton and International Hotel when Elvis performed.
Manilow took over 18 years to break the Elvis Presley record, which the King of Rock and Roll set in just seven years, but the "Mandy" singer is looking to shatter that record and see that no one ever breaks his record.
The "Copacabana" singer may never relinquish that record as he just accepted a lifetime residency at the 1,582-seat Westgate Las Vegas International Theater, guaranteeing that he will perform nowhere else in Las Vegas but at the Westgate for the remainder of his career.
Another long-time Vegas headliner may also never retire from the stage.
Mr. Las Vegas has a popular residency
Mr. Las Vegas Wayne Newton is the definition of a Las Vegas residency. Newton began performing in Las Vegas in 1959 and has lived in Sin City since the 1960s.
