Republican Senate candidate Larry Hogan of Maryland recently highlighted his opposition to former President Donald Trump and emphasized the differences in their responses to the January 6, 2021, US Capitol riot. Speaking at an event hosted by Principles First titled 'Watergate at 50: Lessons in Protecting Democracy,' Hogan reaffirmed his unwavering stance against Trump.
Hogan stated, 'From the moment Donald Trump came down the escalator until today, I have always made it clear exactly where I stand. And unlike many Republicans, I have never wavered. I have never backed down based on polls, or public attacks, or fear of political retribution — and I never will.'
The former Maryland governor also highlighted his actions on January 6, 2021, when he was quick to deploy the National Guard to protect the US Capitol as Trump supporters attempted to disrupt the certification of the 2020 election results.
In a new campaign ad released on the same day, Hogan condemned the violence of January 6 and expressed his determination to defeat Democratic Senate candidate Angela Alsobrooks.
Hogan's stance against Trump is not new, as he has been a vocal critic of the former president. He has made it clear that he does not seek Trump's endorsement for his Senate bid, as he aims to distance himself from the national GOP in Maryland, a traditionally blue state.
