Larrell Murchison suffered the worst injury luck in his first practice back from IR

Larrell Murchison’s return to practice was short-lived. The defensive lineman missed the first four games of the season with a forearm injury but was on track to return as early as this week.

In his first practice of the regular season, though, he broke his foot. Sean McVay shared the disappointing news Friday, telling reporters that Murchison will go back on injured reserve after the team activated him – merely a procedural move that the team had to make.

“It’ll be a semantic thing and then we’ll end up putting him back on IR,” McVay said. “Poor guy broke his foot the first day back from practice. What we’ll do will enable us to not necessarily have to burn him for the year. It’ll be semantics that you guys will see in terms of the transaction, so a bummed for him. He’s worked really hard, but he’ll continue to do it.”

Since the Rams already designated Murchison to return and activated him, he does count as one of their eight players who can return from IR. For a team with so many players on IR, that could limit their options when it comes to activating players such as Puka Nacua, Jonah Jackson, Steve Avila, Joe Noteboom and John Johnson III.

With Murchison out, the Rams signed Jonah Williams, who could be active on game day as early as this Sunday.

“There’s a possibility that Jonah could be up and ready to go,” McVay said. “He has a familiarity with what we’ve done, so getting him out here today at practice and then we’ll see exactly what that looks like. I’ll kind of be able to look at that with the coaches after today.”
