Larian reveals the weirdest Baldur’s Gate 3 class combos

Baldur’s Gate 3 classes are great in themselves, sure. Putting together combos lets you pull off some pretty out-there builds, though, and Larian just revealed some of the weirdest multiclass options of all. The studio posted a chart on the PlayStation Blog with the top 20 most popular class combos from the PS5 and PC versions and some insights on what works – and what you probably shouldn’t do.

Warlock-and-Fighter is the least popular of the lot, with just over 60,000 players having tried that combination, as opposed to the 175,000 who play as a Rogue and Ranger. It’s not hard to see why. Warlock and Fighter have absolutely nothing in common and don’t benefit from each other’s skills, even if you try blending Eldritch Knight with Pact of the Blade. So don’t do that one.

Next on the list was Sorcerer and Paladin. That one actually does make more sense, as both scale off Charisma, and the Paladin armor keeps squishy Sorcerers safe. Not many people see it that way, apparently.

Skipping past flipped versions of these, we come to Rogue and Monk, which Larian product manager Emily Gera said is actually one of the better combinations in the RPG, even if only 71,000 people tried it. Gera said the Rogue’s extra bonus action fits perfectly with the Monk’s unique ability to pull off multiple attacks in one turn. If you put two levels into Fighter and add Action Surge to your repertoire, Gera said you can use 12 actions in one turn by the endgame. Try that for your Astarion if he’s not pulling his weight.

The chart goes up through some more traditional combinations – Paladin and Warlock, Paladin and Cleric, Warlock and Sorcerer – but one other oddity stands out to me. Barbarian-and-Fighter is about in the middle, with 81,000 players having tried that. Sure, the extra action perks don’t stack, but if you power up your Fighter with the Barbarian’s Rage ability, you can tear through most foes with ease.

Gera also recommends trying the Druid and Barbarian combo, a pairing that didn’t even make it on the top 20 list. Rage keeps a wild shape Druid in animal form for longer and turns them into a nearly unstoppable tank, and if you throw some Ranger levels in the mix, you can even summon an extra bear because why not.

So there you go. Another excuse to start Baldur’s Gate 3 again.
