Councillor Steven Bridgett said on his Facebook page: "A number of residents have been in touch regarding the fire on the Otterburn Military Training Area.
"While the fire is sizeable. It is in the impact area (which is part of the area that I represent) where there is the potential for live ordinance, so the decision has been taken to let it burn out.
"It is just burning grass at the moment and isn’t burning at a great pace but is being closely monitored.
"I don’t think think anyone is 100% sure what caused it but a few people have speculated it might have been a flare. It’s nothing new to have fires up there (it is a military training area after all) but it is safer to let it just burn out/contain it as going into the impact area is to dangerous.
"There is also no risk to life or property at this time."
Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service were unable to comment on the incident.
