A spokesperson confirmed that three units were dispatched, and used beaters and mobile backpack sprayers to extinguish the fire.

Crews were called to the scene at around 6.10pm and the fire was out by 8.30pm. It is understood that no one was injured.

Maesteg resident Emily Thomas could see the fire from her window.

She said: "I live in Brynmawr so I could see the mountain from back of the house.

"We first noticed something was strange because there was an orange light reflecting off the windows of the houses opposite us and into our front room and it brightened up the street.

"We then realised it was the reflection from the fire on the mountain behind."

A South Wales Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said they were called out to the blaze at approximately 6.30pm.

The spokesperson said: "We had three appliances in attendance, using beaters and our mobile backpack sprayers. The fire covered approximately one and a half hectares.

"The fire was extinguished by 8.30pm."
