Lara Trump said she is withdrawing from consideration to be the next U.S. Senator for Florida after her father-in-law, President-elect Donald Trump, said she probably wouldn't get the post.
"After an incredible amount of thought, contemplation, and encouragement from so many, I have decided to remove my name from consideration for the United States Senate," Lara Trump said on a post on X. She had been the most vocal candidate when vying for the post and got the endorsement of Donald Trump allies such as Rick Scott.
Lara Trump, who resigned from her post while openly pitching herself to replace Marco Rubio should he be confirmed as Trump's Secretary of State, said she will share a "big announcement" regarding her future next month.
The president-elect said last week he didn't think Lara Trump would get the job when asked in a press conference. "I probably don't, but I don't know. Ron is doing a good job and it's his choice. It's got nothing to do with me," he added, in reference to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis being tasked with making the appointment. Rubio's potential replacement would serve for two years until the next election takes place in 2026.
Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody is reportedly first in line to be appointed as the next U.S. Senator for Florida. That is according to Floridian Press, which quoted anonymous sources in Tallahassee to back its report. The outlet added that Lieutenant Governor Jeanette Nuñez is second in line for the post and Florida Chief of Staff James Uthmeier is third.
The governor's office has not made up its mind yet, with earlier reports anticipating that it would only be announced as of next year. "The governor will be conducting a thorough vetting process and interview process in December that will involve several candidates," a DeSantis adviser told NBC News in late November, adding that the governor is "not in a hurry to make an important decision."
