Landmarks to glow for major Red Cross anniversary

Landmarks across Australia are set to glow red to mark the 110th anniversary of Red Cross Australia. (HANDOUT/Australian Red Cross)

Humanitarian organisation Australian Red Cross is commemorating a major milestone, with landmarks across the country lighting up to celebrate.

Marking 110 years since the aid organisation began its work in the outbreak of World War I, more than 50 buildings and bridges will be illuminated in red on Tuesday.

It is hoped the colourful display will remind Australians of the vital role Red Cross workers have in supporting people in need.

"From major disasters such as Cyclone Tracy and Ash Wednesday, to critical community work such as delivering warm meals and helping refugees start a new life – Australian Red Cross is there for everyone, always," CEO Andrew Colvin said.

Landmarks to be illuminated in Victoria include Flinders St Station, the Melbourne Town Hall and the MCG.

In Sydney, NSW Government House, Luna Park and the Central Station clock tower will be shining bright red.

The Red Cross thanked the 16,000 members and volunteers that have mobilised in the past year for the work they do in the community.

"We couldn't do what we do without our volunteers and members, many of whom have been with Australian Red Cross for over 60 years," Mr Colvin said.

"They're the backbone of our organisation and it's only fitting that we acknowledge their immense contribution during our 110th celebration."
