Lanarkshire yob facing jail after spitting at cop and trying to headbutt him

An East Kilbride man who spat at a police officer and tried to headbutt him has been warned he could be jailed.

Hamilton Sheriff Court heard this week that Robert Wyllie landed in hospital with a head wound after his run-in with officers.

Wyllie, 36, of Telford Road, admitted spitting at a male officer and lunging at him in Eaglesham Road, East Kilbride, on June 8 last year.

Chloe O'Hara, prosecuting, said police officers were instructed to attend at Hairmyres Hospital in relation to an incident involving a male.

She told the court: "They located the accused in Eaglesham Road around 10.40pm.

"He became abusive towards them. Officers took hold of his arms and the accused turned towards the PC and spat, narrowly missing him.

"The accused was escorted to the police vehicle and while sitting inside he lunged forward in an effort to headbutt the same officer.

"He was taken to the prone position and this caused an injury to his eyebrow. He was then transported to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow for treatment and there he continued to shout at officers."

Sheriff Thomas Millar deferred sentence until next month for a criminal justice social work report and an electronic tagging assessment.

The sheriff said: "His record is minor in comparison to this, but all options are still open."

Wyllie had his bail continued.
