Lanarkshire is now home to Europe's tallest Yew tree.
A tree in Dalzell Estate's Ancient Woodland Arboretum in Motherwell was officially announced as the tallest Yew Tree in Europe by the Tree Register of the British Isles.
A representative from the Scottish Arboriculture Association measured two Yews, “Jacob” and “Esau,” with Esau measuring 29.5m and Jacob standing at 29.8m tall.
Jacob stands amongst the largest population of Yew in Scotland with around 50 of these trees identified as ancient or veteran.
Clare Adamson, MSP for Motherwell and Wishaw, visited Jacob alongside Motherwell South East and Ravenscraig councillor, Agnes Magowan.
She told Lanarkshire Live : “Like many others, I have a renewed appreciation for outdoor spaces after the last couple of years.
“So, it is a nice wee bonus to discover that Motherwell is home to Europe’s tallest Yew tree.
“The Yew tree is one of the longest-lived native species in Europe and provides an important habitat for nesting birds.
“Special thanks must go to Maxine Ross, a local horticulturist, for her commitment and expertise in recording almost every Yew tree within the Clyde Valley since 2015 through her #YewTreeoftheClydeValley Project.
“Her project has helped to cement this new record and, hopefully, it will encourage locals to appreciate the fantastic green spaces we have on our doorstep in Motherwell and Wishaw.”
