Lanarkshire woman seeks information on local honoured with bench dedication

A Lanarkshire woman is appealing for information on a former resident in her area - after she prevented a bench dedicated to him being scrapped.

Amanda McIntyre is now looking to find out if Jack Illien has any family or friends still living in Rutherglen.

The bench was set to be removed from Hardie Avenue, where it has sat for a number of years, after a resident asked for it to be moved.

However Amanda noticed the dedication on the bench, and felt it would be a shame if it was to be sent to a rubbish tip.

She told Lanarkshire Live : "It's been outside the block of flats where I stay for many years, and I saw it was being moved.

"I knew it had a plaque on it, and I just thought you can't get rid of that, as that's something dedicated to the memory of that person.

"The problem is that we have no idea who he was, it's still a complete mystery, other than assuming he lived locally there. He was obviously loved, which is why the dedication is there to begin with.

Amanda McIntyre is looking to find out more about Jack (RGR)

"The bench itself isn't in a great state, so I'm having a go at fixing it up. I've got my work cut out for me, but I've got a joiner who's going to help me and hopefully bring it back to its glory.

"I know that I'd hate it if something dedicated to my mum was binned, so maybe we can see if there are any family who want to come and see it.

"If we can't find anyone then I'll get onto the the parks department and see if it can be placed elsewhere, but it's firstly just a case of seeing what we can find out."

The inscription on the plaque reads "In memory of Jack Illien from all your friends and neighbours".

Anyone with any details on Jack should contact Lanarkshire Live via jonathan.geddes@reachplc.com and we will pass the information over to Amanda.
