Lanarkshire woman reflects on Postcode Lottery win after five year health battle

A Lanarkshire woman has reflected on her huge Postcode Lottery win after five years of health hell.

Clare McCulloch and husband Robert were part of the lucky group of residents in Cleland’s Scarhill Street who scooped £30,000 each on the Postcode Lottery this week.

The big win has delighted Clare who is still battling back to full health after being diagnosed with diabeti gastroparesis in 2018.

The condition left her unable to eat many solid foods and she relied mainly on protein drinks for nourishment.

And she was further floored when she was refused the op through the NHS before friends rallied round and raised £20,000 to have the operation done privately.

Speaking exclusively to Lanarkshire Live this week, Clare said: “We were driving back from my friend’s funeral on Friday when Robert first got the call, he thought someone was on the wind-up.

“He called the Postcode Lottery back on Saturday but they would only say we had won a ‘substantial amount’. We had my son Robbie and his girlfriend Chloe’s joint 21st birthday party that night and then on Sunday one of our neighbours called to say it was £30,000 each.

“Robert had two tickets so that took our share to £60,000. It’s absolutely incredible.”

Clare has already spoken to her surgeon about the possibility of travelling abroad for the first time since she was struck down with the condition.

And she has also got her eye on some home improvements as well.

She added: “If I can get the go ahead then I think we will be going away for a week just the two of us. We can take the kids later!

“I also want new windows, doors and a canopy for the house. They’ll be deposits going down on them quickly!

“Since my operation there are times when it’s still tough but I’m a lot happier and this has put the icing on the cake. It just means we aren’t worrying about bills or anything like that.

“I sent a text to my friend Wendy Frame who did a lot of fundraising for me to pay for my op. She was really pleased for me.”
