Lanarkshire whizz kid wins gold medal in national maths challenge

A Lanarkshire whizz kid has scooped a coveted gold medal in the annual Scottish Mathematical Council Challenge.

Eleven-year-old 'mathlete' Jamie Bonner from St Louise Primary in East Kilbride took the top award this week.

Junior mathematicians from across Scotland competed to be recognised for their achievements in this year's Scottish Mathematical Challenge in which they have to answer 12 increasingly difficult problems by themselves, a challenge that's been an annual event for pupils since 1976.

Parents often comment that even if they wanted to, they couldn't help as even understanding the question is a challenge for them.

Jamie tackled the challenge throughout the year, and he was awarded a gold medal and the much-prized Scottish Maths Council Mug for his efforts.

Jamie said: "I just love maths and all sorts of puzzles and I really wanted to do well, I got full marks on the last six questions, so my family are really proud!"

South Lanarkshire often has more winners than many other local authorities and this year was no different, with many East Kilbride schools being represented.

Why don't you have a go at trying to solve the problem below... the answers are on the Scottish Mathematical Council website.

Jonas travels 26 miles in 3 hours, partly on foot and partly by bike. He walks at 4 mph and cycles at 12mph. For what length of time does Jonas walk? How far does he cycle?
