Lanarkshire volunteers rally together to help those suffering in Ukraine

Volunteers in and around Wishaw have rallied together to send supplies to those living in war-torn Ukraine.

The Murdostoun Stands With Ukraine group have been collecting goods to be sent to help civilians caught up in the crisis.

The campaign was started in Murdostoun by Izabela and Andrzej Wojdak.

Izabela told Lanarkshire Live : “We have managed to have several local donation points and we have been able to get two vans that will be able to take collections every two weeks.

“We have also been able to use St Patrick’s Church in Craigneuk which will be used to store the donations.

“We have so much support from our councillors, Robert John McKendrick and Cameron McManus, and the love we have had from local people has been overwhelming.

“I have been in Scotland for 16 years and I’m amazed at the generosity of people.”

On Friday, volunteers spent hours packing out several vans which will help those who have had to flee their homes due to the ongoing Russian attacks.

Murdostoun councillor Robert John McKendrick said: “I spoke with Andrzej when he was looking for storage which we were able to provide.

“The community response so far has been awesome.

“We have a number of Ukranian and Polish people living in our community and to see us all coming together to support them has been very heartening.”

There are a number of collection points across the area that goods can be dropped off including St Patrick’s Church in Craigneuk and the Cash4Clothes stores in Wishaw and Motherwell

Murdostoun SNP councillor Cameron McManus added: “There have been a lot of community groups who are wanting to help.

“People have been dropping things off constantly; it’s been brilliant.

“At a UK level we need to do more and open our doors to more Ukranian refugees.

“But sometimes in these situations you can feel helpless but now this shows that we can do something to help.”
