Lanarkshire village road to close for cycle lane and walkway improvements

A section of Lanark Road will be closed for 12 days while the council improves the area to allow for more walking and cycling.

The road on the main street of Carstairs will be closed this month for under two weeks to allow infrastructure works which will improve local provision for cyclists and walkers by developing measures to encourage slower vehicle speeds through the village.

Head of roads and transportation at South Lanarkshire Council, Colin Park, said the works would take "a little under two weeks".

He added: "We are aware of the disruption that the road closure will cause during that period, however we are confident the long-term benefits will be worth it.

“This project will support active travel for the village community and for visitors. It will also contribute to improving safety, encourage exercise, reduce pollution and enhance community life.”

The works began yesterday (March 7) at 7am and are expected to be completed by March 18 at 6pm.

The project is estimated to cost around £98,000 and will see the construction of a carriageway built out to narrow the road and create pedestrian crossing points with traffic islands to maintain the separation between the cycle path and vehicle lane.

Local access to homes and businesses will be maintained during the period of the road works.
