Lanarkshire train services back to normal after fire on the tracks

Scotrail Engineers worked throughout the night to get trains back up and running after a fire disrupted travel for Lanarkshire commuters last night.

Repairs were carried out in the Rutherglen area, and all lines were closed between Cambuslang and Glasgow Central.

The blaze broke out at around 7.20pm.

Fire crews were contacted and tackled the scene.

Network Rail Scotland tweeted the following about the incident: “Fire services have requested the overhead electrical power is to be shut off to deal with a lineside fire in the Glasgow - Cambuslang area. Due to the emergency switch off services will be impacted.

“We continue to review the damage on the line near Cambuslang with some cable damage already being identified. If you’re travelling tomorrow, please check with your train operator in the morning as some services may be impacted as we work to recover the line.

“Power in the Glasgow Central area has now been affected. Staff are currently working to restore power to allow services to arrive into and depart Glasgow Central as quickly as possible.

“The fire has now been safely extinguished and our staff remain on site assessing the damage. Once they have carried out all necessary assessments, we’ll look to allow train services to restart as soon as possible.”

And a later tweet this morning (Friday) said: “Last night, our engineers carried out repairs to the signalling equipment in the Rutherglen area, and services are now able to run as scheduled.”

Scotrail have since announced trains are back up and running again, tweeting: “Trains are now running normally following the fire brigade dealing with an incident near the railway between Glasgow Central and Cambuslang.”

Meanwhile. Scotland’s Railway is investing £32m in extensive upgrades to the Argyle Line as part of their “commitment to running a safe and reliable railway”.

Work began on March 14 and will continue to May 8, with the route will closed from Rutherglen station to Partick station for the entirety of the project.

The main body of the works will be undertaken on the Anderson tunnel, which has required significant maintenance and inspections since 2008.

As part of the project, Anderston station will be modernised. Works at Anderston include the construction of a new lift shaft and the reconfiguration of the station concourse, booking office and platform stairs.

These works will continue beyond the line closure.
