Lanarkshire town centre struck by 'appalling' sectarian vandalism

A Lanarkshire town centre is facing a clean-up bill running to thousands of pounds after "appalling" sectarian vandalism over the weekend.

Several parts of Cambuslang, including the town's Main Street, were targeted in a string of incidents that saw bus shelters smashed up, offensive messages spray painted throughout, and Irish tricolour graffitti left over walls.

Shockingly, local sources have said CCTV footage shows the vandals to be adults, not teenagers.

A number of slogans referred to football, including saying "f**k the Rangers" and "orange c***s, as well as references to Celtic supporters group the Green Brigade and to the Royal Family.

Members of Cambuslang Community Council (CCC), who have continually campaigned and worked for cleaner, improved streets, told Lanarkshire Live they were left in despair when they saw the amount of damage, and that they expect it will cost thousands to clean up.

A spokesman for CCC told us: "This is appalling vandalism which shames our community.

"It will cost thousands of pounds to repair and clean up at a time when everyone is having to make cuts to deal with the cost-of-living crisis. It sets back everything we have been trying to do over the past few years to make our town look better.

"Let's be clear - this is not 'mindless' vandalism by young teenagers who don't know better.

"The video evidence shows that it is adults who have deliberately gone out with tools and paint to destroy bus shelters and deface walls, phone kiosks and other street furniture with sectarian graffiti.

"There is a group in the area who have been doing progressively worse and worse damage.

"It is difficult to understand the mindset of people who have such contempt for their community that they trash their own town and its image.

"As a community council, we are angry and frustrated at the damage done.

"We have spent many hours over the past year cleaning and repainting walls and street furniture, and the staff of South Lanarkshire Council and other organisations have done the same.

"We are seeking a meeting with Police Scotland and South Lanarkshire Council as to how this criminal damage and graffiti can be stopped and to discuss how the video evidence can be used to catch and prosecute the people responsible."

The community council are now calling for more CCTV to cover the area in a bit to deter the vandals.

One local business owner added: "You would expect this to be kids, but it's not - you can see on video footage that it is grown men who know exactly what they are doing. It's disgusting."

Insp. Kevin Miller told us: " I will look to have additional patrols in the area and submit tasking bids for support from external specialist Police resources to try and combat this type of anti-social behaviour.

"I have contacted the local authority this morning to make them aware and as always I would encourage the public to report vandalism and any type of anti-social behaviour to the Police via 101. "

South Lanarkshire Council were contacted for comment.
