Lanarkshire thug bailed ahead of sentencing over attack on neighbour

A Blantyre man was the victim of an unprovoked attack by a neighbour.

James Rundell punched the victim then threw a bike at him, knocking him to the ground.

Rundell appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court this week.

The 21-year-old admitted assaulting his neighbour in Maxwell Crescent on June 24 and acting in a threatening or abusive manner towards police officers.

The attack happened in the early evening when the victim, who was in his garden, heard shouting from the road and went to investigate.

Raeesa Ahmed, prosecuting, told the court: "He saw the accused and asked if everything was all right.

"Rundell engaged him in conversation and pointed out they were wearing the same t-shirt.

"The victim looked down to see if that was indeed the case and the accused punched him on the nose, causing it to bleed heavily.

"Rundell then threw his bike at him, striking him on the shoulder and causing him to fall.

"After this Rundell picked up the bike and cycled away.

"A short time later he approached the victim again, apologised for assaulting him and asked him not to contact the police."

Rundell, who admitted previous convictions, was on three bail orders at the time.

Defence agent Eddie Robertson said his client has mental health issues and was abusing street valium.

The solicitor added: "He is embarrassed, to put it mildly, by his behaviour that night."

Sheriff Ray Small deferred sentence until next month for background reports.

Rundell appeared in court from custody but was given bail to his mother's address in Craignethan Crescent, Netherburn.
