A domestic abuser broke into his ex-partner's home and attacked her on the very day a court banned him from having any contact with her.
Peter Tinney's violent behaviour caused the woman "great distress and fear", Hamilton Sheriff Court heard this week.
Tinney, 30, of Spittal Road, Rutherglen, was jailed for 15 months.
He admitted breaking into a home on Ash Court, East Kilbride, and assaulting a woman on July 12 last year.
Tinney also admitted threatening or abusive behaviour, spitting at police officers and breaching a non-harassment order imposed at the same court earlier the same day.
A defence agent told the court that family bereavements had affected Tinney's mental health at the time.
The solicitor stated: "He sought relief in alcohol and drugs and that seems to have been the driver for this incident.
"He is remorseful and the social work report recommends a period of supervision to help him as far as his mental health is concerned.
"It was a deplorable incident, but I would ask the court to consider an alternative to custody."
However, Sheriff Thomas Millar told Tinney only a prison sentence was appropriate.
The sheriff said: "A non-harassment order was imposed to protect the complainer after a previous incident.
"It was strict in its terms but you went back to her home immediately, overcame the house security and assaulted her.
"You acted in a way that caused her great distress and fear. What's more, a child was in the house at the time."
The sheriff imposed a fresh NHO, banning Tinney from any contact with the woman for three years.
