Lanarkshire thug admits spitting at two female police officers

A Hamilton man who spat at two female police officers must wait until next month to learn if he will be jailed.

Raymond Sullivan, 56, of Kelvin Gardens, became aggressive after the officers tried to speak to him in the town's Fleming Way in the early hours.

Hamilton Sheriff Court heard he was eventually handcuffed and placed in the police vehicle.

Alice Carey, prosecuting, said: "He then spat numerous times but, luckily, the spittle didn't land on either officer."

Sullivan admitted assaulting the officers on August 24, 2020.

Sheriff Ray Small deferred sentence for background reports and an electronic tagging assessment.

He told Sullivan: "While spitting at police officers is a serious offence, I can't say at this stage what the outcome will be.

"In your favour are that you have not been in custody before and your last offence involving the police was a long, long time ago.

"I'm prepared to leave you on bail at this time."
