A teenager said he woke from a drug-induced sleep to find the bulldog pup he'd bought only two days previously had disappeared.
The youth and his girlfriend were allegedly robbed of the nine-week-old pet at knifepoint.
But he told Hamilton Sheriff Court he remembered nothing about events as he had been "full of diazepam".
Jonathan Jenkins, 34, a prisoner, and William Lambie, 27, of High Street, Newarthill, denied brandishing knives, making threats and robbing the couple of their pup.
The case before a jury collapsed following the first witness's evidence.
The teenager, who is now 17, said he was at his mum's home in Vulcan Street, Motherwell, with his girlfriend on April 7 last year.
He said: "I was just slouching about, playing on the computer and watching TV.
"I barely remember anything that happened as I was full of diazepam.
"I'd bought the pup the day before - it was an extra large bulldog.
"When I woke up the next day it was nowhere in sight.
"I don't know what happened to it. I was told it had been stolen."
The witness added that it was possible he had spoken to the police about the dog's disappearance, but he couldn't remember.
The fiscal then told Sheriff Martin Jones she was no longer seeking a conviction, meaning Jenkins, who had been held in custody ahead of the trial, and Lambie were acquitted.
