Lanarkshire teen claims he attacked two with stick for pestering his mother

A Larkhall youth claimed he attacked two other teenagers with a stick because they had been pestering his mother.

Hamilton Sheriff Court heard this week that Craig Catney chased the first teen into a garden, struck him repeatedly and threatened to "strangle" him.

He also hit another on the body with the piece of wood in Rannoch Terrace, Larkhall, on November 20.

Catney, 19, of Alba Way, admitted assault charges.

Defence agent Gregor Jarrott told the court: "It's his position that these two boys were bothering his mother. His emotions got the better of him and he is full of remorse."

Sheriff Louise Gallacher said it had been a "quite violent and premeditated attack".

She added: "It's a serious matter where you have assaulted two people with a weapon."

However, the Sheriff noted that Catney was a first offender and adjourned the case to have him assessed for a structured deferred sentence - a programme that aims to steer young offenders away from trouble.
