Lanarkshire teen admits jumping man outside of pub because he wouldn't share cigarette

A man was attacked outside an East Kilbride pub after refusing to hand over a cigarette.

The victim was kicked and stamped on as he lay unconscious on the ground, Hamilton Sheriff Court heard on Friday.

Callum McConville, of Lindores Drive, East Kilbride, admitted taking part in the assault in Main Street on July 28.

The court heard the 18-year-old held his hands up straight away, telling officers who arrested him: "I fully admit to it. No hiding at all. I did that. I can't deny it."

Neil Thomson, prosecuting, said the victim was smoking outside a pub at 1am when three males, including McConville, crossed the street and walked towards him.

Mr Thomson stated: "One of the group asked for a cigarette and that request was rejected.

"The victim began to walk away but was followed by the three males who ran up behind him.

"He was punched to the head which caused him to fall.

"While he was on the ground the group kicked him and stamped on his body. During this episode he lost consciousness.

"Members of the public intervened and the police were summoned. When officers arrived McConville and the others were still nearby.

"The victim was taken to hospital. He had a lump and bruising to his head, but decided to leave the hospital before an examination was completed."

Mr Thomson said another man, Steven Irvine, 31, has already appeared in court and admitted taking part in the assault.

Another teenager who was also involved was reported to the children's panel.

McConville, a student, appeared as a first offender.

Sheriff Thomas Millar deferred sentence until next month for a criminal justice social work report and allowed him to remain on bail.
