Lanarkshire taxi rank and bus stop out of bounds as work progresses on transport interchange

Motherwell railway station will temporarily be closing one of its taxi ranks and a bus stop as part of the construction of the new transport interchange in the town.

The taxi rank and bus stop on Muir Street will close in the coming weeks and remain out of use for months.

The closures are necessary to allow North Lanarkshire Council’s contractor Balfour Beatty to continue work on a new station access road, improved footways, new taxi rank, disabled parking bays and expanded bus stop on Muir Street.

The access road will be created from the roundabout at the north of Hamilton Road, behind the buildings on the left of Hamilton Road and Muir Street, to join the existing road in front of the station.

On the week commencing Monday, March 14 the taxi rank will close but a temporary one will be provided in the Hope Street car park, close to the footpath link to the station, and the rank on High Road will remain open.

The existing bus stop will close the following Monday – March 21. A temporary stop for buses travelling north will be located on Muir Street, next to the Ladywell footbridge over the railway. Alternative bus stops in the town centre are also available at Merry Street, Hamilton Road and West Hamilton Street.

The £2m project at Muir Street is funded by the Glasgow City Region City Deal and North Lanarkshire Council.

Alongside this project, ScotRail, Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) and Transport Scotland are working at the railway station to deliver an enhanced forecourt and building with a glazed roof and brighter, larger concourse, improved ticket and retail sales facilities, new customer lounge and refurbished customer toilet facilities.

The bus stop is due to reopen at the end of May, and the new taxi rank is expected to open in July.

Lyndsay Noble, Project Development Manager for City Deal, said: “We are aware the temporary closures of the bus stop and taxi rank are inconvenient but they will be kept to a minimum and alternative arrangements put in place.

“Overall, the project is expected to be complete in the summer, and it will provide much improved facilities for everyone using the railway station and the wider town centre. The new transport interchange will improve travel connections by rail, bus, bike, taxi, car and for pedestrians.”

John MacDonald, ScotRail Senior Project Manager, said: “We thank customers for their continued patience while work on the new transport interchange is carried out.

“These improvements to transport integration outside the station, combined with the ongoing redevelopment of Motherwell station, will create more options and better connections for business and leisure travellers, and encourage more people to travel in a low-carbon way.”
