Lanarkshire supermarket supports community with school uniform donations plan

A Lanarkshire supermarket is helping to support the community by organising a school uniform donation scheme.

The Co-op on Rutherglen Main Street started the collection and donation idea just weeks after kids finished up for summer.

They asked customers and members of the public if they had any spare uniforms they would be able to donate.

The clothes are all hung up and are placed near the back of the store and people are welcome to have a look and take what they need.

Michael Duffin, store manager, told Lanarkshire Live: “I started working at the Rutherglen store a few months ago, and I had seen other places doing this and thought it would be a good idea to do the same thing.

“I’ve got four kids. I know the cost of uniforms can really impact people, especially with the increased cost of living. It was more just to help families because uniforms can be a pressure now, with some kids wanting branded items.

“I had some spare uniforms myself and then people started bringing stuff in.

“Peacocks have been great, they’ve helped by giving us rails and coat hangers to put the stuff up on.

"We’re getting a lot of brand-new uniforms, some still have the tags on them. There’s been pencil cases and school bags as well; the response has been overwhelming."

Michael added: “We’re open 7 am - 10 pm and people can come in and have a look when it’s quieter as well because there still can be a bit of a stigma with this type of things, but we’re hoping to keep going with it for a few weeks after the school starts.

“If there’s anything left, we’re planning to give it to the schools, so they can continue it."
