Lanarkshire supermarket set to be demolished and replaced with new store

A Blantyre supermarket is set to be demolished under new plans granted by South Lanarkshire Council.

The town's Lidl store, on Whistleberry Road, will be knocked down later this year to make way for a brand new, modern corporate Lidl store.

It is understood the current building dates from the 1980's and does not reflect the current Lidl ‘experience’.

Head of planning and economic development at SLC, Pauline Elliott, told us: “Planning permission for the demolition of the existing Lidl foodstore and erection of a new Lidl foodstore at Whistleberry Road, Blantyre, was issued on January 21, 2022.

“The consent also includes associated parking, landscaping and photovoltaic roof panels and the new store is nearly 400 square metres larger (gross floorspace).

“All the related drawings and report of handling can be viewed online via the planning portal.”

A spokeswoman for Lidl UK said: "We can confirm we are planning to improve our existing store in Blantyre and will be in touch in due course with more detail for the local community."
