Lanarkshire student who made lunch fit for a President reaches national finals in top competition

A South Lanarkshire College student is set to whisk things up at the finals of a national skills competition.

Shannon Lippiatt, a professional cookery student at the East Kilbride-based college will compete in the WorldSkills National Finals, which are taking place from the November 15 to 18 in Belfast.

Shannon was shortlisted for her outstanding culinary skills following a very competitive regional heat and she is now preparing to test herself against some of the best budding chefs from across the UK.

The talented student told Lanarkshire Live : “I was really excited to hear that I had been shortlisted for the WorldSkills competition, it really will be a honour and privilege to take part.

"I want to thank my lecturer David Auchie for all his support and encouragement in helping me get to the finals, I can wait to get started.

Chef lecturer David said he was "again delighted" for Shannon, who he called a dedicated student "both in the classroom and at competitions".

He told us how Shannon "always gives her heart and soul" to every dish she creates.

David added: "The mouth-watering menus she produces and prepared, in are outstanding and everyone at SLC wishes her every success as she embarks on the WorldSkills."

Along with other hospitality students Shannon prepared and served a lunch ‘fit for a President’ to guests including, Joe Biden, Barack Obama and Boris Johnson at the COP26 in Glasgow.

Alan Sherry, acting principal, is quick to recognise not just the success of Shannon but also the staff that supported her.

He added: “It is brilliant to see our students achieving so much whilst studying at the college. Shannon is one example of student success at the college and really does showcase how outstanding our students and staff are.

"Our professional cookery and hospitality lecturers, similarly to all our staff, have given Shannon the confidence, skills and knowledge to succeed in her industry.

"The lecturing team have years of experience in industry which they share with students every day helping them to achieve their full potential.

"We wish Shannon all the best for the finals in November and will be watching closely as a whole college community.”
