Lanarkshire student nurse set for spooky role with theatre show

A Croftfoot student nurse is set for a spooky switch from her day job - with a role in a Lanarkshire theatre production of the Addams Family.

Melissa Hemmingsley, 20, is also a performer and dancer with Eros Musical Society, who are set to return for their first post covid show at the East Kilbride Village Theatre next week.

They'll be adapting the stage version of the much loved spooky and kooky family, who are familiar to many through numerous films, cartoons and a 1960s TV show.

Melissa is a dance captain with the theatre group, meaning she'll have responsibility for ensuring everyone is correctly placed for each routine in the show.

She told Lanarkshire Live: I've always loved musical theatre, and it was something I thought about doing as a career before I went with nursing.

"But I still love performing and it's something to do as a bit of fun. I've been with Eros several years now and the group are so lovely. Everyone's so supportive there and I'm looking forward to the Addams Family.

"I've known the musical and I've seen the cartoon film, so it should be a fun on to do onstage.

And Melissa, who stays in Croftfoot, admitted that it's a bit of a change from her studies.

She added: "It's completely different! That's what makes it so exciting as well. As a dance captain I'll ne taking charge of the routines and it's something I really enjoy doing. I'm in the company for this one, so I'll have a few parts in the show too."

The rest of Eros are delighted to be getting back on stage, after halting their shows due to COVID-19.

Lesley Wilson is club vice president and is playing one of the principal roles, the Addams Family mother, Morticia.

She told us: “We have missed this so much. It is really obvious how excited all the cast and chorus are at rehearsals.

"You can feel a real buzz in the room, and there is clearly a real benefit to everyone’s mental health.

"It has been over two years since we last performed on stage, with Sister Act, which was very well received, and it’s great to get back to what we love to do."

The show will run at the EK Village Theatre from Tuesday, March 8 until Saturday, March 12.

Tickets can be booked here or on the night.
