Lanarkshire sports fans can take trip down to memory lane thanks to new project

Sports fans in Cambusnethan are being asked to take a nostalgic trip down memory lane and recall stories of yesteryear.

Sporting Memories is a charity and social enterprise that uses the power of remembering and talking about sport – along with physical exercise – to tackle dementia, depression, and loneliness in older people.

It currently has over 100 in-person and digital clubs operating across the UK - including several in Lanarkshire - with a new club being set up in Cambusnethan.

The group, which takes place in Made4UinML2 in Greenfield Drive, is run by Lorna Wood and Heather Venesky.

Lorna said: “We had a very good number of people coming along to the group before the pandemic but since then we are trying to get it back off the ground.

"Sporting Memories is not just for people with dementia but also for people who may be suffering from isolation and loneliness.

“It’s great for family members to come along as well and have a chat to people in the same position as them.”

Sporting Memories clubs are dedicated to bringing older people together with the aim of making a positive difference in their lives by providing them with a welcoming, supportive and structured environment where they can develop emotional confidence to improve their lives for the better.

Sporting Memories provide social and physical activities that allow older people and all those connected with them, from family members and carers, to have fun whilst creating relationships and companionship with people in their local community.

Chris Wilkins, co-founder of Sporting Memories, said: “Talking about sport is bedrock of our community clubs for older people. It’s a powerful, emotive and often joyous topic that engages people on all levels.

"We use sport to tackle social isolation and improve physical and cognitive well-being and resilience.”

The Cambusnethan Sporting Memories Club takes place at Made4UinML2 in Greenfield Drive.

It runs every Tuesday afternoon from 12.30pm to 2.30pm. It is free of charge and tea and coffee is included.
