Lanarkshire sea shanty star to feature in BBC documentary to prove he's no one-hit wonder

Sea shanty singing sensation Nathan Evans is to star in a BBC documentary which follows the former Airdrie postie as he attempts to prove that he’s not just a one-hit wonder.

The Lanarkshire singer – who is best known for his viral sensation song Wellerman – will feature in BBC Scotland's What Next for the Wellerman?

Nathan, 27, has been riding a wave of success since uploading a sea shanty which caused an online sensation. And it was a moment which changed his life.

The dad-of-one quickly notched up a million social media subscribers as well as platinum sales in UK and Germany, where the Wellerman shanty went down a storm.

The documentary follows Nathan as he attempts to capitalise on that success and prove that he’s not just a flash in the pan, but a singer-songwriter with staying power.

The cameras follow Nathan as he tries to make sense of his whirlwind success and takes the next steps to build his career.

The documentary hears from pals, former work colleagues, his old music teacher, record label chiefs in Germany, and his wife Holly who supports him as he takes the roller coaster ride towards stardom.

This compelling 45-minute film about the Wellerman singer’s journey to escape the ‘one-hit wonder’ tag is directed by Neil Sargent, who comes from a background in journalism and creative writing, and has previously developed a career as a producer and archive producer.

What Next for the Wellerman? has been produced through a new scheme launched by BBC Scotland and Screen Scotland which pairs emerging directors with seasoned production companies.

As part of the BBC Scotland/Screen Scotland Emerging Directors initiative, the production companies involved have provided training, guidance and support to the new directors, while the BBC has supported the development and production of each documentary, as well co-ordinating ‘masterclasses’ with leading industry experts.

What Next for the Wellerman? is a Storyboard Studios and Specky Productions programme for BBC Scotland.

It airs on Thursday, July 6 from 10.30 – 11.15pm.
