Lanarkshire schools ranked from highest and lowest in 2022 league table

Lanarkshire's top performing secondary state schools have been revealed in the latest league table.

The Times Scotland's 2022 High School League Table calculates a percentage of the number of pupils who achieved the Scottish Government's so-called 'gold standard' of five Highers in 2021.

Figures saw the performances of every secondary school in the country scored on the percentage of pupils attaining five Highers.

In Lanarkshire, Strathaven Academy was the top performer, ranked 34th from 342 schools - a drop from its previous position of 30.

Dalziel High School in Motherwell was the next best performing, ranked at 46, a jump of two places on last year.

Our Lady's High School in Cumbernauld was ranked at 61, with St Andrew's and St Bride's High School in East Kilbride coming in at 62.

Also in East Kilbride, Duncanrig Secondary came in at 78 - an improvement from 98th place last time out - while Calderglen High in EK reached 93rd spot.

Holy Cross High School in Hamilton was placed 83rd and Hamilton Grammar ranked 98th.

Biggar High enjoyed a huge jump from 176th place to 80th this year, while Stonelaw High also saw a significant improvement, moving from 178th to 111th, as did Lanark Grammar, going from 189th to 118th.

Elsewhere in South Lanarkshire, was placed 136th, up from 163, while Carluke High improved from 246th to 166th. Trinity High in Rutherglen dropped to 269th from 220th last time out.

At the other end of the table, Clyde Valley High School in Wishaw was ranked 327th in Scotland - the worst performance in Lanarkshire - while Braidhurst High in Motherwell came in at 316th place.

Calderhead High in Shotts was placed 301st, down one position on last year, while Wishaw's Coltness High moved up eight places from 227 to 219.

St Aidan's High in Wishaw dropped from 113th place to 182nd, with Our Lady's High in Motherwell also dropping from 102nd to 196th.

In Monklands, Airdrie Academy was ranked 138th, a huge jump from last year's 231st. St Ambrose High in Coatbridge dropped to 142nd from 77th, Coatbridge High moved from 264th to 242nd and Caldervale High in Airdrie was 243rd from 277th last year.

Mark McLaughlin, education correspondent at The Times Scotland, said: “The Scottish Government claims it ‘does not do league tables’ but this is disingenuous. It discloses an annual school-by-school breakdown of the proportion of pupils who earn qualifications at each level of the curriculum - a league table in all but name.

“By publishing this information in an accessible and fully searchable guide, we seek to empower parents with information around the performance of their local schools.

“Five Highers is a good measure of success, but not the only measure. For that reason, The Times has also published the socioeconomic profile of the top and bottom schools, which shows some punch above their weight.”
