Lanarkshire schoolgirl wins national art competition

A South Lanarkshire schoolgirl recently triumphed in a national drawing competition.

Cami-Li McCluskie, a primary one pupil at Glengowan Primary School in Larkhall beat thousands of pupils from around the UK to land top prize in a Sumdog competition.

Cami-Li was the P1-P3 winner after Sumdog, an online games-based learning platform, had challenged pupils to design a new avatar to be used on its website. Sumdog wanted children to feel more represented when using the avatars in games.

And the youngsters design was commended by Sumdog’s Team who said: "As we're looking to include a more diverse representation of outfits, hair styles and skin tone, we absolutely loved Cami-Li's avatar with her rainbow dress, braided red hair and freckles.”

Head Teacher, Graeme Murray, spoke of his delight after Cami-Li’s achievement was announced.

He told Lanarkshire Live : “Sumdog is a website that is widely used by our staff and pupils in order to further increase engagement and raise attainment.

"We are very proud of the record that we have in South Lanarkshire Maths Contests so it’s fitting that one of our pupils has been recognised in this way.”

Cami-Li’s drawing will now be transformed into a computer-generated avatar and she will be presented with her own framed design once Sumdog has produced it.
