Lanarkshire school kids urge drivers to slow down their speed

Clydesdale pupils are asking drivers to slow their speed around school areas.

Junior Road Safety Officers from Kirkfieldbank Primary School in Lanark took part in a mobile speed Indicator Display Sign Visit which was set up along from the school on Riverside Road.

Drivers heading towards Lanark were targeted by the sign displaying their speed. The speed was displayed on the sign and depending on the speed of the vehicle, either a happy or sad face was displayed.

Chair of the council’s Road Safety Forum, Councillor Davie McLachlan, said: “Well done to the JRSO team at Kirkfieldbank Primary School.

“I hope they made drivers using the roads around their school think twice about the speeds they are driving at.

“We need to encourage drivers to take more responsibility for their speeds and this type of initiative should be applauded.”

All schools in South Lanarkshire are invited to take part in the Junior Road Safety Officer scheme each year.

Pupils can be primary six or seven and have a significant role of highlighting road safety in their school through competitions, speaking at assemblies, having notice boards and promoting road safety throughout the school year.

Within the school area, 20 miles per hour road markings and yellow carriageway surfacing are in place along the front of the school, not only to remind drivers about the location but also their speed.
