Lanarkshire school full of festive spirit as they prepare for Christmas Fair

Pupils at a Lanarkshire school are full of festive cheer as they prepare for their first Christmas fair in three years.

Burnside Primary in Rutherglen will open its doors on Sunday for the popular local event, which was last held in 2019.

Amongst the festivities there will be stallholders selling gifts galore, fun and games for all the family, must-have raffles prizes, a Christmas café, the ever-popular tombola stalls and a Guess The Gonk competition.

Some of the pupils have already got into the spirit of Christmas by posing for pictures with the school gonk.

Little visitors to the fair can pop into Santa’s Grotto to tell Father Christmas what’s on their list this year while one of the school’s pupils, Lily Young, will be running her own special stall.

Lily, a P6 pupil, was keen to do her bit for the school’s fundraising and will be running a stall selling craft items and Christmas treats.

All the money raised by Lilly will go towards the fair funds generated on the day.

Fiona Adamson, chairwoman of the Burnside Parent Council, told Lanarkshire Live : "Our Christmas Fair is the perfect way to kick off the festive season! We're all just so excited to be able to get together as a school community.

"It's a wonderful feeling to be planning this sort of event after so long – we can’t wait."

Headteacher Helen McGarvey added: "We have missed the real community buzz that the Christmas Fair brings with it.

"It will be great to see our pupils and families joining in the fun and it will also be lovely to see our school neighbours, past pupils and their families too.”

A key fundraiser for the school, the hugely popular Christmas Fair has been on hold since 2019 due to the pandemic.

Fiona explained: “The fundraising aspect of the fair is important but the day means far more than that to us.

"It's a chance to have fun and be together as a school family, something we've missed for far too long now.

"Throughout the year, we fundraise to support our school, providing the best learning experience for our children. This year, more than ever, money is tight everywhere.

"We'll be using any funds raised to go straight back into Burnside Primary to really help reduce the cost of the school day.”

Helen McGarvey added: "Times are tough but we still want our pupils to benefit from all the extras like the visiting pantomime and Christmas party snacks.

"All money raised directly benefits every pupil. If everyone helps out just a little, it makes such a huge difference overall."

The Christmas Fayre starts at 11am and runs until 3pm. Entry costs £2.50 while kids go free.
