Lanarkshire school children raise cash for Ukraine thanks to sponsored walk

Pupils from a Wishaw primary school have raised much needed cash to help Ukrainian children.

Kids from Calderbridge Primary School in Coltness had been learning the inspiring stories of the Ukrainian people walking to the Polish and Slovakian borders.

And the children then opted to hold a sponsored walk around the school to raise funds for the British Red Cross raising a whopping £2182.42.

Calderbridge class teacher Kayleigh Marshall spoke to Lanarkshire Live this week.

She told Lanarkshire Live : “Our “Journey with Ukraine” has taken place over the course of the week.

“Each class has walked as many miles as possible within a given time around our school pitch.

“This was to show respect for those who have travelled up to 700 miles to reach the safety of Poland and surrounding countries.

“The children have shown a compassionate and caring attitude and will continue to walk until the end of the week.

“This fundraiser was extremely important as part of our rights week as it is essential to highlight the rights which are being removed from people and to work together to try and make a difference.”

The fundraising drive from Calderbridge is one of several initiatives around Wishaw to help the Ukrainian people.

These include the Murdostoun Stands With Ukraine group who have been helping transport tonnes of goods and supplies to help those in need and the team from ADP Aluminium, led by Tom McAvoy, who have helped house refugees in flats in Poland.
