Lanarkshire residents urged to stay safe as Storm Otto batters country

Lanarkshire residents have been told to stay safe as Storm Otto batters the country.

The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings for parts of Scotland until 3pm today as strong winds are expected to cause traffic delays and cancellations to transport services, with the potential for power supplies and mobile phone coverage to be affected.

Met Office chief meteorologist Andy Page said: “Storm Otto will bring high winds and rain to the UK, with some northern parts of Scotland and the northeast of England likely to get the strongest gusts of wind, possibly in excess of 75mph.

“There’s a chance of travel disruption and high-sided vehicles could be particularly prone.

“There’s associated rain with Storm Otto, with 40-50mm likely to fall over parts of western Scotland.”

SP Energy Networks has issued safety advice to help Lanarkshire customers keep safe in the event of any potential power cuts caused by forecast high winds during the storm.

Guy Jefferson, Chief Operating Officer, SP Energy Networks, said: “With severe weather forecast, potential damage to our power lines is more likely and it’s important our customers are fully prepared, just in case.

“We’re currently mobilising teams of engineers to areas where we expect Storm Otto to have the most impact and our teams are on hand 24/7 to help all of our customers should they find themselves without power.

“If you experience a power cut, please report it to us as quickly as possible by calling the national emergency helpline on 105. The sooner we know about any power cuts, the quicker we can make sure power is restored to anyone impacted.”
