Lanarkshire residents presented with British Empire medals

Six South Lanarkshire residents have been presented with the prestigious British Empire Medals for their outstanding contributions within their communities.

Lady Susan Haughey, Lord Lieutenant of Lanarkshire, presented Kathleen Flynn, Hazel Harper, Sheila Anne Buchanan Hill, Ruby Mitchell, Paul Muir, and Ellen Rafferty with their medals at a ceremony at Strathclyde Park. Elizabeth Russell Seaton of North Lanarkshire also received her medal on the same day.

Kathleen, of Hamilton, was awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) for services to Food Supply during COVID-19; Hazel, from Lesmahagow, received the BEM for services to the Financial Services sector and the community during COVID-19; East Kilbride woman Sheila was given the BEM for services to NHS during COVID- 19.

Meanwhile, Ruby, of Carluke, was awarded the BEM for services to the community in Carluke; Larkhall man Paul was awarded the Members of the Order of the British Empire for International Development; and former headteacher Ellen, of Uddingston, was presented with the Members of the Order of the British Empire for Services to Education and Elizabeth for services to the Carers Network in Scotland and Elizabeth, of Wishaw, for services to the Carers Network in Scotland.

The British Empire Medal recognises those who have provided a service to the community without seeking any reward or recognition, but rather have provided these services voluntarily and for the benefit of others.

The Lord Lieutenant was joined by provost Kenneth Duffy and Derek Brown, depute chief executive of North Lanarkshire Council in making the presentations.

Provost Duffy said: “It was an honour to be able to be part of the ceremony to present these well-deserved medals to all these outstanding individuals.

"Their contribution to helping other in Lanarkshire has been invaluable and they are an inspiration to others, and I congratulate them all on this recognition.”
