An inspiring East Kilbride rape survivor, who was attacked while she was pregnant, has vowed not to be silenced and to raise awareness of vile ‘beast’ Callum Rainey.
Mo MacMillan has waived her rights to anonymity after Rainey, 27, was sentenced last month in Edinburgh to eight years after previously being convicted of rape, attempted rape and sexual assault.
A judge praised Mo, and another woman attacked by Rainey, of Rutherglen, for their bravery after they told their stories.
Rainey committed assaults on Mo and another woman at locations in Saltcoats and East Kilbride between September 2020 and August 2021. Speaking to us, Mo, who later lost her baby, said she hopes that her story will warn others.
The East Kilbride woman said: “I don’t want him to get the chance to do this to any other girls.
“Knowing what he is like, I don’t want anyone else going through what I have gone through.
“If I can spread awareness of what he has done, hopefully, it can save another girl the trauma that he put me through.
“No one should be hurt by this beast again.
“I will never get over it. I may learn to live with it, but it will never go away.”
The 34-year-old mother continues to experience trauma and is perpetually terrified.
She added: “It has taken nearly two years for me to get justice. It has been an ordeal reliving it.
“Having to go through the trauma of it all again in the trial was absolutely dreadful and I felt violated all over again.
“It is something that is always going to affect me.
“I had bad anxiety already, and now it has gotten even worse because of this.
“There are days upon days where I haven’t eaten or slept.
“I need to have someone with me at all times when I go out because I am still petrified that something might happen to me.”
She continued: “When he does get out, he may go back to stay in Rutherglen, and I am anxious as hell because of it.
“My whole life has been affected. I get night terrors constantly, and I am in a persistent state of fear.”
Throughout the court ordeal, it has been the support of her son, father and friends that have gotten Mo through to the other side.
She said: “I don’t think I would have gotten through it without that support.
“My son is the reason I am still here and he makes it worthwhile getting up every day, even when I am struggling.”
Rainey will be supervised for an additional two years on his release and remains on the sex offenders’ register for life.
It is understood that he intends to appeal.
A spokesperson for Scottish Courts and Tribunals said: “The court can confirm an Intimation of Intention to Appeal has been lodged in respect of both conviction and sentence.”
