Lanarkshire rallies to send humanitarian aid to Ukraine

Community groups, businesses and individuals throughout Lanarkshire have rallied this week to send humanitarian aid to Ukraine.

The country was invaded by Russia last week, with many of its cities being bombed since the assault began. Other countries around the world are now trying to help support Ukrainian citizens, including many Scots.

Larkhall businesswoman Nicola McCallum, who runs L'Perfection on the town's Union Street, was keen to help and has begun a collection in her salon's spare room.

She told Lanarkshire Live : "We began by helping a local gentleman gather donations which is being headed up by Honeywell with the shipment then being organised for Poland then onto Ukraine.

"I think they have now received a huge amount so we are going to keep things going to help with donations and we will be in touch with the Red Cross and UNICEF.

"We've had a great response already and we've had lots of donations. I really just wanted to see what we could do to help at first and now it is really bringing the whole community together. "

The 112th Lanarkshire Scouts group, which is based in Hamilton, has also launched its own appeal with donations being sent out to Poland to support the thousands of innocent people currently fleeing the conflict in Ukraine.

The group is looking for items listed on its Facebook page to be bagged up in black sacks or carrier bags and to be brought along to Our Lady and St Anne's hall, Jack Street, Hamilton between 6-9.30pm tomorrow (Thursday, March 3).

Gary Ward, 112th Lanarkshire Group Scout leader said: "We launched our appeal at the weekend and we been flooded with donations. We wanted to do all that we could to help.

"We've had donations of clothing and essentials for young people too. People have just been amazing. It's been a fantastic response so far. We've already filled a mini-bus full and will continue with our efforts.

"We will be accepting donations until Thursday initially, which will be removed from the hall after the last session has ended and shipped over the weekend. We are hopeful however that there will be more shipments in the near future. "

St Patrick's R.C Church, Shieldmuir, Wishaw, is on its third day of collection anyone wishing to donate can head to the garage behind the church which will be open from 8am until 8pm.

At the minute they have requested they do not need clothes however they are in need of medical goods.
