Lanarkshire quad bike rider jailed after setting dog on police officers

Police officers had to take evasive action when a quad bike rider reversed at speed towards them in Wishaw.

Minutes earlier the officers had taken refuge in their car when William Durnion set his dog on them.

Durnion was jailed for 21 months when he admitted a string of charges including driving offences and threatening or abusive behaviour.

The 31-year-old was also disqualified from driving for 27 months.

Hamilton Sheriff Court heard that two females were at a skatepark in Gateside Road, Craigneuk, on February 27 last year.

Abby Seal, prosecuting, said: “They saw a quad bike approaching and the male rider was shouting and swearing at them.

“The bike was driven towards them at speed and they feared they would be struck, so they ran off, pursued by the accused before he came to a halt.

“Police officers saw Durnion emerge from a house in Pentland Road later.

“He had a bull mastiff-type dog on a long lead.

“It was barking and baring its teeth. Durnion threatened the officers that if they didn’t leave he would set the dog on them.

“He then released the dog and the officers, fearing for their safety, returned to their vehicle.

“Durnion started his quad bike’s engine and it went forward, hitting a wall.

“He then reversed at speed directly towards the police vehicle in an effort to hit it, but the driver was able to move the car, narrowly avoiding a collision.

“Durnion tried to turn but failed and the quad bike overturned, pinning him underneath. He freed himself and ran off.”

Durnion also admitted possessing a machete and hitting a man on the body with a baseball bat in a separate incident in Gateside Road on March 8 last year.

He further admitted failing to turn up in court to face charges in December.

It was only in March this year that he was traced. He has been in custody since.

Defence agent Diarmid Bruce said Durnion left the area because he believed his life was in danger.

The solicitor stated: “He had been shot at.

“Police were in contact with me, wanting to make sure he was safe.

“It got too much for him and eventually he went to Blackpool.”

Durnion was now said to be looking to settle down and put his offending behind him.

The court heard he has a new address away from the Wishaw area.

Sheriff Andrew McIntyre said only a custodial sentence was appropriate given the number and nature of the charges. It was backdated to March.
