Lanarkshire pupils spring into action to help homeless prevention charity

Pupils at Muiredge Primary School in Uddingston went springing into action for charity last week.

Around 150 youngsters took part in a sponsored Jumpathon event which raised money for Right There - a charity working to prevent people becoming homeless and separated from loved ones.

Representatives from the charity visited the children and told of their work, and explained how the organisation is currently supporting refugees throughout Scotland.

The primary pupils have been learning about caring and sharing in the community as part of the religious and moral education programme.

The children from P3 - P6 have been discussing human needs and wants and how they are met and supported by others.

Speaking on the event’s success, teacher Lynn McAuliffe said: "We have all been learning about the plight of refugees from Ukraine and the children suggested we all do something to help.

"The children knew lots of charities but we decided to support a less well known charity called Right There which works to support the needs of homeless people including refugees, in Scotland.

"A representative from Right There visited the school to talk to five classes and the children asked lots of great questions. We decided a sponsored Jumpathon would be a great way to raise some money and the event has been taking place all week in the gym hall.

"As a teacher I am so proud of all the children and their enthusiasm and hard work which has made this event possible."

Caroline McLafferty from Right There said: “A huge thanks to everyone at Muiredge Primary School!

"Everyone at Right There really appreciates your support in helping us in our mission to prevent people becoming homeless or separated from the ones they love.

"We loved seeing the pupils have fun at their Jumpathon, while learning about the different causes of homelessness.

"From Lanarkshire to Orkney, we run programmes for people, at home and in the community. We support those facing tough times, on their journey to creating safe and supportive places to call home.

"Thanks again to all the amazing pupils, staff and the wider Muiredge Primary community!”
