Lanarkshire pupils join experts for science sessions

Pupils from five Lanarkshire schools have sparked connections with leading scientists and academics by taking part in a stream of online lessons.

Senior students from St Margaret’s High in Airdrie, St Aidan’s in Wishaw, Motherwell school Braidhurst, Cardinal Newman High in Bellshill plus Larkhall Academy joined participants from across Scotland at the Medical Research Scotland academy.

They took part in a month of interactive weekly sessions, featuring presentations from experts including university lecturers on topics including viruses, pharmaceuticals and the role of research in combating the Covid pandemic.

Free sessions were streamed straight to the classrooms of the five local schools for pupils in fourth to sixth years, thanks to the medical research charity.

It aims to help address “the shortage of science, technology, engineering and maths skills in Scotland”, with the Lanarkshire schools being among 36 from across Scotland taking part in the virtual sessions – while the content is also being made available to stream on demand.

Medical Research Scotland chair Professor Heather Wallace said: “The goal of the academy is to inspire and foster connections between the next generation of aspiring medical professionals and valued academics, [and] we have witnessed the immense enthusiasm for medical science among school leavers across the country.”
