Lanarkshire pub catches fire months after being forced to close due to 'spiralling costs'

A once-popular pub has gone up in flames just months after it was forced to close due to spiralling costs.

Emergency services descended on The Bullfrog Bar and Lounge on Shields Road in Motherwell around 3.45pm on Sunday after a blaze broke out.

Huge plumes of smoke were seen billowing up into the sky as the building was engulfed in flames.

Fire engines have been dispatched to the scene and remain in attendance into Sunday evening.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue spokesperson said: "We received a report of the building being on fire at around 3.48pm on Sunday, April 16. Operation Control mobilised two appliances to the scene and we remain in attendance."

Police are also on the scene.

The much-loved pub announced it would be forced to close in November due to being unable to afford the 'spiralling' energy costs. The pub was a favourite of former Celtic star Kieran Tierney.

Speaking to the Record in 2018, he said: "The Bullfrog has been part of my life since I was a kid.

"My dad would walk us down and we’d watch their games. And I’d do what kids do, I’d nick out on to the pitch at half-time with a ball for a few crosses and finishes.

"It has always been my local but now it’s my mates who are playing and people from our area go and watch.

"You always get a good crowd and I’m there every single game on a Sunday as long as Celtic aren’t playing. It’s a priority for me, seriously."
