Lanarkshire provost wishes Commonwealth Games athletes good luck

South Lanarkshire athletes are all set for the Commonwealth Games which kick off today (July 28).

Nine athletes from the region will represent Team Scotland at the games which are held in Birmingham.

South Lanarkshire Provost, Councillor Margaret Cooper, said: “On behalf of the people of South Lanarkshire I wish each of our talented athletes the very best for these Games.

“I can only imagine the dedication, hard work and sacrifice that goes into training for such elite events, and I look forward with great pride to following their progress over the coming fortnight.

"I know that, like me, communities across South Lanarkshire will be cheering them on every step of the way.”

Among the South Lanarkshire athletes is the Scottish team’s youngest member, gymnast Eilidh Gorrell who is 17 and the oldest member, weight lifter Jodey Hughes who is 39.

The nine South Lanarkshire athletes who will be competing include badminton player Kirsty Gilmour (28) from Bothwell who is a double Olympian and is competing in her fourth Commonwealth Games.

Three netball players will compete, including Emma Barrie (20) from Stonehouse who is making her Commonwealth Games debut this year, Bethan Goodwin (23) from Cambuslang and Niamh McCall (22) from Strathaven.

Grant Sheldon (27) from Hamilton will compete in the triathlon, and this will mark his third Commonwealth Games.

Carys McAulay (24) from Rutherglen will take part in athletics – she will compete in the women’s 4×400 metre relay team. Alexander Thomson (21) from Hamilton will take part in athletics as well, he is one of five paralympic athletes heading to the games as part of Team Scotland and will be competing in the men;s T38 100 metre event.

As mentioned, Jodey Hughes (39) from East Kilbride will compete for her second time at the Commonwealth games.

And Gymnast Eilidh Gorrell (17) from Hamilton will make her debut at the games in Birmingham.
